Unfortunately, the information I have for Hugh L. W. Burgess is unsubstantiated gleaned from various genealogy forums, census records and other researchers.
According to best guess Hugh’s parent’s were John Burgess, born about 1818 in Virginia, he died 26 September 1868 in Giles Co., TN and Mary Massey, born about 1812 in Giles Co., TN, I have no death date or place for Mary.
John’s father was Harrison Burgess born in Virginia about 1783, and dying 1865 in Giles Co., TN.John’s mother Jennie Akin, born about 1790 in Virginia and presumably dying in Giles Co., TN, I have no death date or place for Jennie.
Mary Massey, John’s mother I believe was born about 1812 in Giles Co., TN to John Massey, born 1786 in NC, and dying in Missouri about 1858.Mary Henry Massey born 1792 NC died 1 June 1856 in Giles Co. TN.
The information I have for the Massey ancestors is all undocumented, however after several years of research I believe the information for John Massey & wife Mary Henry is accurate, although John’s place of death is still in doubt.
Mary Massey’s sibling Drury L, Eliza, Joseph H, E Jane, John Wesley, Leroy F, James H, Lucinda Carolyn.
As for a Native American bloodline, there is no evidence one way or the other.
Mary Ann Sanders, born about 1845 place unknown death date and place unknown. Her father was William Carroll Sanders, 1819 – 1888.Her mother Martha Wright, I have no place of birth or death or dates.
According to 1880 Census for TN, Gibson Co., Grices Township Hugh & Mary had 6 children, William W (1866), Eliza J (1869), John F (1871), James L (1875), Leona A (1877) and Mattie L (1878).
Exploring 1860 census for Giles County, TN if found listing for sever Burgess families, most likely all related.John H., John, Thomas, BF, Harrison. About the only research I have done on this line has been by chance, start one thing and end up on another.Any way I hope this is of some help.
If you have documentation and or old photos you are willing to share I would appreciate your assistance and efforts.
