Your William Burgess may have been a son or grandson of Benjamin Burgess, who had much dealing with the Cherokee in early days of back country, SC/NC. He is mentioned in the SC Indian records as being "only a little more civilized than the Indians themselves" and of being "as close as a brother to John Vann (who was what relation to the famed Cherokee chiefton?). Benjamin is also mentioned as having "the first rifle-gun in the province." He was a fugitive in 1751 because he and Vann had stolen some deer hides from the Cherokee, which took SC provincial Governor James Glenn to the back country to prevent a major Indian War. Benjamin's brother, James Burgess is also mentioned, as his brother, in the 1751 record and speaks of them perhaps going to their camp in NC.Benjamin obtained a SC land grant for 100 acres in 1756, at which time he stated that he had one son.He appears to have had some education and could read and write.See "South Carolina Documents Relating to Indian Affairs"; also "Expansion of South Carolina" (Dr. Robert Merriwether. 1941). Benjamin and James Burgess were perhaps brothers to Sarah Burgess, who obtained a grant near Benjamin's in the 1750s and was married to early SC Indian agent John Evans. She may be seen in the 1790 census as widow Sarah Evans in Laurens Co., SC near Joel Burgess. She also is perhaps the same Sarah Evans who witnessed the will of an early William Burgess in SC.
