Jack, I have done quite a lot of research on this Burgess line in the last few years. My husband's gg-grandmother Mary Jane Burgess (married to Alvin T. Hodge) was a sister to your John S. Burgess. His full name was John Shepherd Burgess, and he was also known as Jack and Jackson.
The parents of Mary Jane & John S. were John Burgess and Sarah Hale.(She may have been born a Starr and married first to a Hale). John Burgess was a son of William Burgess and Mary Vann who came to Indian Territory about 1830 from the Eastern Cherokee Nation (TN or GA).William and his children were on the 1851 Old Settler's Roll. Mary was not, likely she had died before that date.
The William you mentioned was Mary Jane & John S.'s half brother.Jane was the third of his four wives.William's date of birth (1819) on his tombstone at Oaklawn Cemetery is wrong. The 1900 & 1910 census, along with the 1896 Old Settler's Payroll and Dawes enrollment card all say he was born between 1834 or 1836.I have more on this family.
