Hello,My name is Christopher Finley, and I am a decendant of Elizabeth Burchett, daughter of Joseph and Martha Burchett.Elizabeth(Betsy)Burchett was born in 1784,in 1900 she gave birth to a biracial child named John Louis Burchett. She had a child with a young slave named Louis, and he was raised by his grandmother Martha who was a widow by then.John Louis Burchett was a free negro because his mother Betsy was white,he was my great, great ,great, great grandfather. When Betsy died she left her land to John Louis in Manson ,NC(known back then as Nutbush township).John Louis donated land in Manson to build a church and school called Burchetts Chapel, this is where his decendants are buried. I am from this limb of the Burchett family tree, who were known as mulatto in the US census reports back then. After John Louis came his son John Louis 2nd,Sophronia Burchett,Raymond Bebley Burchett Sr.,Raymond Bebley Burchett Jr,Elaine Burchett Finley(my mom) and me.When I was a kid my parents used to take me down south to Warrenton,NC to visit my great grandfather at his farm. I have documented proof that this is true,My cousin and I have traced our family tree back to the slave Louis and Elizabeth Burchett and we knew she got married after having John Louis,my cousin also mentioned a man named Robinson who cosigned for him to acquire assets in his name,it was probably Christopher Robinson, his stepbrother, please reply if you have any questions. This information about John Louis probably was not passed along the caucasian side of the Burchett family history because of the stigma of Elizabeth birthing a black child in those days. What a small world we live in.God Bless! My great grandfathers farm is off of Wavely Thompson road in Warrenton,NC,there is a cemetary on that road called King-Burchette cemetart where his descendants are buried, his ancestors are buried at Burchetts Chapel cemetary, and the caucasian Burchett ancestors are buried at Zion cemetary in Warrenton. That is where our family from Warrenton are buried,The Burchetts came to Warren County from Dinwiddie Va!
