I don't know if this helps, but I am a Birchett, and so far have traced our roots back as far as Prince George County, Virginia. The earliest Birchett in this area, that I have been able to locate is Edward Birchett, who, apparently in 1713, gave four slaves to James Thweat (apparently a judge), in exchange for the care of himself and his wife, Ann. In the Family Tree Maker, www.familytreemaker.com , there appear to be many different business and legal transactions taking place bewteen this Edward Birchett and various members of the Batts, and Thweatt families. I have no idea whether there are any connections, but there are some sources that are listed for further information: Historical Southern Families by J.B. Boddie, Volume 1, p. 166 and Cavaliers and Pioneers by N.M. Nugent, Volume 2, 1666-1695, p. 332. There is also a magazine listed -- Magazine of Virginia genealogy Society 1984 and 1987, #s 4 and 2 respectively. Have fun!
