Seeking info on Otway Birchett and his wife Emily M., both born in Virginia. Otway was born about 1807, Emily about 1818. At this time I have not found any ancestors for Otway and do not have a maiden name for Emily. My fellow researchers and I first find the Otway Birchett family in Greene Co AL on the 1840 census. [At that time his was the only Birchett/Burchett listed in AL] Otway had 3 daughters listed on the 1850 census; Mary H (b 1837 AL d 1912), Amanda E. (b 1839 AL d 1905) [Amanda is my direct ancestor], Caroline (b 1842 AL), Frances H. (b 1848 AL). Not on census was a male child, James Leander, b 10/1845 d 5/1846. Otway was a sheriff. [presumably of Greene Co AL] Otway died 5/7/1859 in Smith Co MS. 1860 census of Smith Co. MS listed E. M. Birchett with 3 daughters, Fannie age 10, Ellie age 7 (b AL) and Amanda May.
Mary H. married William David Bragg 8/7/1858 in Green Co. AL. Wm and Mary were also living in Smith Co on 1850 census. Amanda E. married Richard B. May on 11/19/1856 Greene Co. AL. As of yet I have not found a date of death or divorce for Amanda or Richard.
We know of 2 brothers for Otway Birchett; William Henry born abt 1812 VA and Nathaniel F born about 1812 VA. Both brothers are listed on 1850 census in Greene Co AL. William and Nathaniel both were deputy sheriffs. William married Sarah A White on 9/20/1845 in Greene Co AL. Nathaniel married Elizabeth Watson 4/7/1846. I do not believe neither William nor Nathaniel went to Smith Co with Otway.
Amanda E. Birchett May married James E. Griffith on 8/16/1863 in Smith Co MS.
