Burchett Family Genealogy Forum

We are African American Birchetts. I had a conversation about two years ago with a Birchett around Hampton, virginia. He said that there were five small plantations that dated back to at least 1850. He also said that each plantation had a small group of no more than five slaves, and that the plantations themselves no longer are standing. He said that there are diagrams of them in the county archives, or in the library somewhere. I know that this doesn't sound terribly specific. However, from family stories passed down, our family goes back to Virginia (we are now in Detroit, New Jersey, and Boston). Our ancestors migrated north from Virgnia, probably somewhere in the late 19th century or early. My grandfather on my father's side was born in New York in 1890. I would assume, then that his parents had come there at least a decade or so earlier? His name was Wilbur Birchett, and he was born in 1919. His father, William James Birchett, was born in 1890 and died in 1940. I am curious about the Birchett family history, and would like to find out whatever I can. The Birchett historian, of European descent, told me that the Birchett name dates back to French Huguenots as far back as the 1600s? I have lost contact with the very friendly and fascinating Birchett historian from around Hampton, Virginia. However, I can provide any additional information concerning African Americans with the surname of Birchett living in Michigan and New Jersey. He did tell me that it was based in Prince George County, Virginia. My e-mail address is cbirchett@yahoo.com. I hope to hear from you soon!
