Randall,
I am very interested in your posting!
Last week I published my parents' family history (650+ pages) and now I am beginning to dig deeper into my husband's family.

I am excited to read what you have to say as I believe you and my husband are "cousins".

I have not known exactly which way to spell the name and have decided it was Birchett because of the spelling I found in the library in Piggott, Clay Co., Arkansas about my husband's grandmother. However, in finding her and her family in the two censuses in Arkansas the name was spelled Burchett and Birchett.

Now to their names: My husband's grandmother was Levina Caldonia Birchett, b. 20 March 1855 in McNairy Co., TN. (She married Greene Francis Ellis 9 Jan. 1873 (probably in Arkansas since she was 15 in the first census I found). Clay County did not exist at that time and so they were in the Greene County, Arkansas census in 1870.
Her father was Dennis, b. about 1820 in TN (according to census information and age) and the mother was listed as Mahala. I have no earlier information on the Birchetts. The census listed eleven children.

In the next census, Dennis was not with Mahala and the children who were still at home. Don't know when or whether he had died. Have not researched back further yet.

Now back to Dennis and his family ... I had obtained a book through inter-library loan a couple years ago that had Birchetts in it from McNairy Co., TN. The author was a descendant of James Birchett, b. 1817 in McNairy Co. James' father was John, 1782-1852. I have his wife's name and a brief outline of James' descendants. I entered this into a separate group in my computer program and printed it out with a note to myself questioning whether John was the father of Dennis and whether James was the brother of Dennis. The author, Katherine Bertha Elizabeth JOSS COOKE, also gave the name: Nancy BIRCHETT as James' sister. That would make her Dennis' sister, also, if we have the right family. But, it seems that we have enough information to believe you and I are talking about the same family!

What do you think? Are you a descendant of Dennis also? My husband's mother was a daughter of Levina Caldonia BIRCHETT ELLIS. His Grandma and Grandpa ELLIS had 13 children.

Look forward to hearing from you! Where do you live now?
