Paul: I have found the Tazewell County marriage records for William Burcham and Sarah McMeans and William Johnson and Sarah Burcham. As you suspect, the Sarah Burcham that married William Johnson is the daughter of Elihu and Nancy McMeans, and not the daughter of William Allen Burcham. Here are the records:
November 20, 1854 – “William Burcham, 21 years, 6 months, 21 days, son of Joseph A. and Fanny Burcham, and Sarah McMeans, 24 years, 3 months and 5 days, both born Tazewell Co.Married by William E. Neel.”
William Burcham enlisted in Company C, 23rd Battn Infantry Regiment Virginia as a Private on September 3, 1861 at the age of 30.He died on August 1, 1863 fighting in the battle of White Sulphur Spings in Greenbriar County, West Virginia, leaving Sarah a widow.
May 21, 1865 – “William Johnson, 54 years, 3 months, 18 days, widower, born Wythe Co., son of William and Elizabeth Johnson, and Sarah Burcham, 35, widow, born Tazewell Co., dau. Of Elisha and Nancy McMeans.Married by Edward Vertigans.”
While I don’t have a copy of the record, the Margery McMeans who married Iredel Burcham died of tuberculosis in Tazewell County, VA on November 10, 1857.This explains why she’s not listed living in Iredel’s household in the 1860 Tazewell County census. The Margery McMeans listed in the 1840 census (and later in the 1880 Carter County, KY census) is reputed to be Elihu’s sister, although I do not have documentation supporting this relationship.
Hope this helps….
