John Evans..Please read..Illinois, Greene Co
The mystery of my Evans ancestors continues to perplex me. John L Evans was born about 1775 in Ireland. He came to America with approximately $30,000 worth of gold, originally settling in Tennessee (for a short period), then on to Greene County, Illinois, becoming the wealthiest man in that area. By 1821 he had bought up a great portion of Greene County, Illinois' western area, especially around Eldred. His many attempts at further success were made in the Ferry and Mill sites from which he operated, many not panning out too well. His properties were along Macoupin Creek to the south and Illinois River to the west.
John L Evans had at least three sons, who, I believe, immigrated to America slightly after he did. They were John (my gr gr gr grandfather), Thomas, and William (who married Eliza Scott). John L Evans died around 1832 in Greene County, Illinois.
Family names of his descendants include:
Heaton, Sprague, Scott, Smith, Burch, Ramsay, Milner, Diller, Page, Kimber, Woods, Merker, Kroon, Capps, Huffaker, Dixon, Benedict, Gray and many, many more.
Please help if you can,
Sincerely,
Jack Gray
