*Note – with regards to another post to this site, I could not find any trace of a supposed Charles Bunting as father of the BUNTING family of Chinguacousy.
CHILDREN
The older children were born in the Niagara Dist/Lincoln Co., Ontario.Sometime around 1819-1820 the family moved to Chinguacousy Twp, Peel Co., Ontario.
*Note: the only ‘daughter’ that I could not confirm as being a BUNTING was Mariah/Maria m. Erastus HEMPHILL.All their children’s marriages did not give Mariah’s maiden name.Death registrations in Ontario started listing parents after 1908, and found two Hemphill children who died after 1908, but both had the parents’ section in blank! So Mariah/Maria is circumstantial (through inter-marriages, etc, and buried beside James and Elizabeth Bunting). Also, William Erastus SPARLING, the son of Richard & Martha (HEMPHILL) SPARLING, completed the death registration for James CLOW, s/o Richard & Jane (BUNTING) CLOW, and curiously did not know James’s father’s name, but knew that his mother was Jane Bunting – showing the relationship was likely through the Buntings (i.e. Martha (Hemphill) Sparling and James Clow were 1st cousins through their mothers Mariah and Jane respectively).
On another curious note, Erastus, youngest son of James & Elizabeth (Markle) Bunting, has the initial ‘H’ on his tombstone (possibly for Hemphill?), and James, s/o James & Elizabeth (Markle) Bunting named his eldest son ‘Erastus Hemphill BUNTING”.I have seen this before, i.e. where the son-in-law’s name makes its way into a family line…
As far as can be determined, these are the children of James & Elizabeth (Markle) Bunting (there may have been more):
1.Jane BUNTING b. ca 1809 Niagara Dist. d. 23 July 1885 Erin Twp, Wellington Co., ON, m. ca 1833 Richard CLOW b. ca 1802 Upper Canada d. bef. 1881 census.
2. Mariah/Maria BUNTING (*unconfirmed) b. ca 1812 Niagara Dist. d. 27 July 1878 Brampton m. 1830 Erastus HEMPHILL b. 8 Nov 1802 Canada d. 27 Sep 1889 Toronto, York Co., ON(Erastus and Maria are buried in Brampton Pioneer Cemetery, Chinguacousy Twp).
3. Sarah BUNTING b. ca 1814 d. bef 1881 census of Chinguacousy, m. ca 1835 John G. WATSON b. ca 1801 Scotland, d. 26 Jul 1886 Chinguacousy Twp.
4.Elizabeth/Eliza Ann BUNTING b. ca 1816 d. 27 Mar 1905 Etobicoke, York Co. m. 1839 Samuel WESTERVELT b. 1808 Bay of Quinte, (Ontario), d. 24 June 1890 Chinguacousy Twp.
5.James BUNTING b. ca 1819 d. aft 1880 census of Johnson Co. Iowa, m. ca 1851 Mary ? b. Ireland, d. aft 1880 census Iowa.
6. Samuel BUNTING b. ca 1822 Chinguacousy Twp, d. 5 Nov 1881 Brampton, m. ca 1846 Susan THOMPSON, b. 3 Aug 1826, d. 1 Feb 1903 Toronto Twp, Peel Co.(*The widow Susan Bunting m.2 on 17 Apr 1888 Arthur Wellington LAMBERT.She names her parents as James & Catherine THOMPSON.Children also list their mother as Susan THOMPSON – no record of Susan’s surname being ‘McClellan’ as per another post to this site).
7.Archibald BUNTING b. ca 1825 Chinguacousy Twp, d. 17 Apr 1882 Brampton, m. ca 1848 Catherine FALCONER, b. ca 1831 d. bef 1881 census of Chinguacousy Twp.
8.Erastus H. BUNTING b. ca 1831 (?) Chinguacousy, d. 18 Jan 1872 Chinguacousy Twp, (to date not known if was single or married).
9.Mary Margaret BUNTING b. 6 Apr 1831 (?) Chinguacousy Twp, d. 15 Jan 1903 St. Catharines, Lincoln Co., m.1 ca 1851 James? McMILLAN, m.2 on 31 Mar 1863 Thomas Baines MUNDY b. 20 Mar 1838 Lincolnshire,England, d. 15 Sep 1908 St. Catharines.
*Note: possibility that Erastus and his sister Mary Margaret were twins “if” both b. ca 1831 (i.e. Erastus d. Jan 1872 aged 40 yrs, so would be 41 in April, and Mary Margaret also gives an 1831 birth year on 1901 census). However, it is possible that Mary Margaret was b. ca 1829, and since her second husband was younger than her, she ‘skimmed’ a few years off her age (?).
