AUGUSTA -- Herbert Thurston "Bunk" Bunker Sr., 95, died March 30, 2005, at Maine General Medical Center in Augusta.

He was born in Augusta on May 6, 1909, the son of Rhoden T. and Alice P. Bunker. He graduated from Cony High School in 1927.

He worked in the various shoe shops in Augusta and Gardiner until the 1930s, then joined the management staff of Lewis and Crossett Shoe Co. He worked at Bath Iron Works in the machine shop during the war. At the end of the war, he established his own business, Augusta Tile and Building Co. For the next 40 years, he built many homes in the Augusta area and laid ceramic tile in many homes and businesses.

He was a avid lover of the outdoors, hunting and fishing, and most of all he enjoyed his beloved camp on Moosehead Lake with his family.

He was predeceased by his wife of 60 years, Alethea; two brothers, Calvin Bunker and Seldon Bunker; and one sister, Francis Bradeen.

He was a member of Green Street Methodist Church.

Survivors include one son, Herbert T. Bunker Jr. of Augusta and his wife, Anita; one daughter, Nancy L. Thurston of Augusta and her husband, Marlin; six grandchildren, Shawna Burke, Shannon Bunker, Shaun Bunker, Martin Thurston, Rhoden Thurston and Stephanie Lagasse; three great-grandchildren, Katelynn Young, Adam Burke, Devon Lagasse and a baby girl to be born in a few days; and two sisters, Christine Swift of Augusta and Olga Ouellette of El Paso, Texas.

A memorial service will be held at Green Street United Methodist Church, Saturday at 10 a.m. Following the service, a gathering of family and friends will take place at the church.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Sebasticook Farms, P.O. Box 65, St. Albans ME 04971, care of Deb Huber, providing services for the mentally and physically challenged
