Julia,
Polly was a alternate name for Mary. It's like James and Jim or Jack and John. This was explained to me by Ann Bunch Carson of Williamsburg, Ann lived to the age of 105 years old. Mary / Polly I'm sure has tricked many a researcher. I have it on several branches of the family.
