Hi Marge,
I have the same information you have, a name and a marriage date to Sally Mathews. Once upon a time, about 25 yyears ago, I was making notes on every person named Bunch in the Whitley County area; you remember the days before computers. Well I keep all those notes and ever so often a piece of the puzzle falls into place. I have never place Lafayette with Solomon Bunch's family. [I had a rare opportunity to read court record book #1 and several early court order books.
HOWEVER! I was researching a William Bunch age 10, listed in the household of Solomon Bunch at the time of the 1850 census. The following information is a conclusion summary from my note file dated 1981. Since it remains in my note file, draw your own conclusions:
Research file date 1981.
There was a William Bunch age 10 living in the household of Solomon Bunch at the time of the 1850 census. Marriage records show a William Bunch age 26 married Elizabeth Rains 8 oct 1856. This would place William's birthdat ca. 1830.
Polly Bunch is listed in the Whitley County Court Order Book #1 page 472 dated October term 1938 and the summons is in regard to her four sons listed in that court record:
1. Lafayette Berry Bunch b. ca. 1828
2. Elisha Smith Bunch b. ca. 1834
3. James (or Jarvis) Jackson Bunch b. unknown
4. William Shakleford Bunch b. unknown

This court record (page 482) indicates that Elijah Smith Bunch is bound out to Jonathon McNeal until he reaches the age of 21. James ( or Jarvis) Jackson Bunch is bound out to Jesse L. Cravens until he reaches the age of 21. Lafyette Berry Bunch and Polly Bunch (page 495. The old record book is faded and some parts of the pages are eaten away by book worms, but it appears the court awarded the child to Saumel Vanoy.

Polly Bunch was summoned back to court; page 234 of Court Order Book #2.
Polly Bunch was listed as head of household in 1830 and 1840 census. It would appear that she had four sons mentioned above, are all illegitimate. There is strong evidence to indicate that Polly named the boys after their natural father by naming the child with the father's first and last name. I have found evidence in the court records of a Lafayette Berry and a Elisha Smith. Therefore, Polly Bunch's son William appears to be the same William that was living with Solomon Bunch in 1850, and the same William that married Elizabeth Rains in 1856.
Polly was living in the household of Jane Bunch at the time of the 1850 ccensus, page 791. Polly, age 86, was living with Matilda Bunch age 60, at the time of the 1880 census. Note: Matilda was the ex-wife of Jesse Bunch (Solomon's son); Jesse was married several times. So, who is Polly? I never placed her as Solomon and Nancy's child, since I have not found positive proof. But I know she is related! Good Luck.
Terry
