There's a 1900 census entry for Cleveland or Toledo that shows William Bunch as head of household with wife Mary A. Bunch and stepsons Clarence Bunch & Fred Bunch. I believe Fred is Ralph Bunche's father, and this entry explains why there may be a bit of a mystery about Ralph Bunch's genealogy beyond his grandmother. It would appear that the Nobel laureate Ralph Bunche's name came to him by his father's stepfather, not by bloodline. I wonder if this fact may not partially explain Ralph's appending an "e" to the end of his step grandfather's surname...
