A book on English surnames that I consulted informed me that the "Bunch" name is Middle English, and denotes "one who is hunchbacked."

For the person looking for the "Indian chief"--there is a tradition in our family (Charles Madison Bunch was my grandfather's name) that HIS grandfather was Cherokee. Supposedly, his name was Owen Bunch. I must say that my grandfather and my father were both such inveterate "storytellers" that listeners could safely discount 90% of what either one said. If this is a family trait, then the "chief" part of your family folklore might be a bit of. . .exaggeration.

I'd be pleased to share whatever little I know or find out.
