If you read The Melungeons, The Resurrection of A Proud People, by Dr. Brent Kennedy (Mercer University Press, 1997) p.172, it has Bunch as a common surname. Also, Bunch is a surname listed by Walter Plecker, Virginia's first Registrar of Vital Statistics, as people of color "trying to pass as white".
