The author of the article is probably long dead as I believe it appeared in a history of the county around the turn of the century. The information I have shows this particular William Bunch on Jay County IN census in 1850 & shows his birthdate as 1780 and the location as North Carolina. Seems to me that perhaps some effort was made by his descendants to embellish his history a bit OR to alter it. I haven't been able to obtain info on ancestors earlier than Ishmael Sr. who I believe was William's grandfather. There were several William Bunches who served in War of 1812 including one in an Ohio regiment who might be this one, as "my" William's family emigrated from NC to OH and THEN to Indiana. Why someone would have altered his origins to FRANCE is a mystery at this point. I wonder if it might have something to do with race--I believe this family most likely came to NC from VA & there were a lot of slaves surnamed Bunch in those parts. Could be an effort on his descendants' part to rewrite the family history a bit. All just speculation at this point! Any clues would be welcome...
