I have learned more about my J.M.Bumpus. I don't have anything that would connect him to your James.
Mine is James Bumpus who came to Logan Co. from Hardin Co. Tenn. between 1902 and 1910. He was reared by his grandfather Adam Bumpus. The family were from Lauderdale Co. Ala. and Hardin Co. Tenn. The two counties are just across the river from each other. I believe the family were slaves in Ala. until after the Civil War, when they crossed the river to Tenn. I have them back to the 1870 census. I would be happy to exchange info if you think this is the family you are looking for.
