Barry,
Have you found Benjamin BUMP on the 1800 and 1810 census in Rhode Island? Obit notice in 1815 (Arnold's RI vital records) said he was age 85 and had a church / congregation in RI for 35 years. 1800 & 1810 Census reports him as (all others) not (free white) not (slave) and obit states:(colored) He is likely not the first Black Bump, but a 1730 birth date gets you back 270 years.
