I just came across these items in Tennessee Tidbits 1778 - 1914 Vol 1 pg 16 - Rev.Hezekiah Balch - 30 January 1807. he stated his belief that it was improper for him to have slaves. "I do humbly and earnestly pray that you may emancipate from slavery Ruth Lewis, aged abt 38 yrs, ROBERT BUMPAS, about 8 years and Dorcas Lewis age abt 1 1/2 years. The last 2 are to remain with me until age 25 as bound servants but not as slaves. The two were children of Ruth Lewis. Greene Co Tn court minutes # 146. pg 52 JAMES BUMPAS - bound February 1793 to John Jones until age 21, to learn the weaver trade. He is an orphan of JOB BUMPAS and now twelve years old last September. Greene Co TN court minutes # 281. pg 53 - JOB BUMPAS - Died before November term 1792 when his orphan, ELIZ, was bound to Jacob Broyles. His orphan, LETTIA, was also bound to Jacob Broyles. Greene Co TN court minutes # 271. MILLE (female) Bumpas was the administratrix. (Ibid 281) His orphan, SARAH BUMPAS, was bound to Jeremiah Broyles. (Ibid 477). pg 53 - LETTIA BUMPAS - Bound November 1792 to Jacob Broyles until age 18. She is orphan of JOB BUMPAS and is now four years old. Greene Co TN court minutes # 271. October 1799 whe was bound to Eliz Broyles and is now seven years old. (Ibid 192). pg 53 - SARAH BUMPAS - Bound 1794 to Jeremiah Broyles until age 18.
