Hi Tom,
I don't know if you're familiar with The Jarvis Family and Other Relatives web page, but it's a great help if your Baumgarten family was Moravian or if they lived in the Salem, NC area during the 1800's and 1900's. Here is the URL:

After having just visited it, I am surprised that they don't have a family page for the BAUMGARTEN family, especially after reading the following in my copy of Owen County Cousins by Rosemary Faulk Lovell, page 524.
Maria FISCUS, b. 7/17/1742, Germany, d. 11/11/1786, Salem, North Carolina, m. (1) 2/17/1765, Johann George BAUMGARTEN at Bethabara, N.C.He was born 10/4/1722 at Hesse-Cassel - d. 12.10/1779.He had been sent by the Moravian Church in Germany to help establish the colony in North Carolina. He arrived in N.C. 6/13/1755 and in 1768, after his marriage to Maria Fiscus, leased 100 acres on Dauba Branch and began a farm.He died in 1779..."
So many of these Moravian Germany families intermarried for several generations, and they moved together to Owen County, Indiana in the early 1800's.Perhaps a search of the Moravian records would reveal some information. There is a several volume set of the translated German language records of the Moravian Church in North Carolina, and I think it can be ordered on film at your local LDS Family History Center.
Additionally, if your family is from the Moravian NC group, you can order a copy of the "libenshlaf" (spelling?) or funeral memoir which each Moravian person wrote about their life.It was read at their funeral with additions by the elders of the church. If the records have already been translated from German (and you're patient), you might possibly find some information in them.(I did so for the daughters of my immigrant FISCUS daughters.)
I'll keep looking.Just one question:Do you think the youngest son of Johann Peter Baumgarten and Maria Fiscus could be your Johann George?I have his birthdate as 1775 and your earliest birthdate possibility is 1780.
