Hi Amy:

Your grandfather Robert James Bilyea was the brother of my wife's grandfather George Logan Bilyea. We were just in London for the Bilyea family reunion held in Thorndale. Don't know if you've ever attended, but it is descendants of Robert Bulyea (born in new Brusnwick, 1836 - died in Blanshard Township in 1905) and Mary Ann Logan (1835-1912) - the grandparents of Robert and George. And that is correct: your great-great grandfather's name was BULYEA - the Bilyea spelling came in the next generation.

Robert and George's parents were Richard Poinier Bilyea who was born in London township in 1869 (died in 1944) and Agnes Theresa Atkinson (1875-1974).

Your grandfather was born 18 August 1905. He graduated from Veterinary College in Guelph in 1933. He later inspired my wife's father to become a veterinarian. Robert married Jean Willett Crosby (born Aug. 17, 1905) of Guelph on August 30, 1930. He went to Edmonton in 1936, then was employed by the Health of Animals Branch in Ottawa was was the veterninary in charge of meat inspection for Burns. Ltd. (this all comes from a 1952 Bilyea family history).

The Bilyeas are related to all of the Bulyeas and Belyeas in Canada and those are just three of the family names of descendants of Louis Boulier (born 1672 in Saintonge, France), a
French Huguenot who fled religious persecution in France and ended up becoming part of the early Dutch community in what is now
New York.

I have some of the earliest family history online at http://www.bilyea.net/
