My paternal grandmother was a Bulmer and family legends link us with the baronial Bulmers. I've traced back to
Thomas Bulmer (Servant/Watercartman/Yeoman/Labourer)in St.
Oswald's Parish, Durham from (at least) 1764 to 1815.
He was married to Jane and then Martha (Fitzgerald) and was
son of John Bulmer 'yeoman late of hallgarth street', St.
Oswald's. And he was a Freeman of Elvet Moor 'as son of same'. (The earlier pages of the book containing this info
are missing.)The last Bulmer Knight, Sir Bertram, (a Catholic) was buried at St Oswald's in 1638
A Thomas Bulmer snr is referred to in Durham Miltia records.
Further, a Thomas Bulmer - aged three - (son of John Bulmer, labourer, deceased) was, with his mother, Elizabeth, and sister, Mary, subject of a Removal Order from St Os to Guisborough c.1743. (Thomas' age in St Os Burial Register in 1815 was "87"). But (a) I have an ancestor buried at Tweedmouth whose age on headstone is
at quite big variance with age in Burial register. And (b)
for the Thomas Bulmer senior referred to in Militia Records to have been in Militia legally he would have had to have been 60 or under and couldn't have been 87 in 1815. And I'm fairly sure the Thomas Bulmers (snr and jnr)in Militia were my relations.
THE BOOK DEALS WITH THE KNIGHTS AND SHERIFFS HARDLY MENTIONS MY CONNECTIONS, BY THE WAY!
I'm also interested in the Bulmer dna project and indication as to where they originate. (They're supposed to be Scandinavian or Anglo-Saxon - on circumstantial evidence.)
