We are still waiting on results from the 37 marker test so the results have not yet been posted on www.familytreedna.com, but my cousin's Y-DNA group ("haplogroup") is R1a1a and the SNP was M198.All the Bullards/Ballards on familytreedna.com are in the R1b group. R1a1a is commonest in Germany, Poland, Scandinavia. It's presence in England is somewhat rare and is thought to have arrived with Viking raiders and Danish settlers. I have assumed my Bullards came from the British Isles, but they did seems to get along with their German neighbors pretty well and a number of their wives were of German descent.
The earliest US locations that I can associate with my Bullards seems to be along the Rappahannock in VA, but no othermale line from there has been tested yet. So I'm not sure if they represent an entirely distinct branch of Bullards or if my branch has, say, an adoption that I didn't know about.
BTW, if anyone is contemplating DNA testing, there is special pricing at familytreedna.com until the end of this December. You may have to join the Bullard/Ballard project first, but this is free.
