The first thing one usually does is to speak with any living person who knew the ancestor, in this case your grandfather.Have you spoken with his wife and children?They might hold a world of information that would be helpful.
Obtain a copy of his death certificate.On it should be included his place of birth and the name of his parents.
You can track people through their presence in federal census..so, with the information obtained from his death certificate you should know his parents name and where they lived when he was born....this should be enough info to obtain a birth certificate.Then, look them all up in the appropriate year census...the census should also give you the names, ages and dates of birth of any siblings.Also, once you have your great granparents names, the census will tell you where they were born, their ages, etc....you then look at census for those places and appropriate years....this just moves you back gradually, one generation at a time.This is the general way of proceeding when you know nothing past your parents.
