From what I have read, and the limited research I have seen, the Bulger surname, as well as Bolger come from the gaelic name O'Bolghuider. It was shortened and changed to be Americanized. I don't have a ton of info on this, but I've seen the O'Bolghuider crest, and know that it has roots from the area of County Wexford, Ireland. The crest is a red greyhound in front of a green sycamore. It's relatively simple - but it does lend itself to the potential of nobility and strength. The greyhound was a simple of the welthy, sporting class - and the sycamore of strength. I can't confirm this much, and I'm only scratching the surface of research. I would be more than anxious to see any research anyone might have that I could tie into. Off the top of my head, I can't name names too far back. I have research to WW1, but nothing further back than that. The name that most sticks in my head is Niles Bulger, who's investigative reporting with the Waterbury Republican-American earned the newspaper a pulitzer prize. If anyone can give me some good links to this - let me know.
