I would suggest that you start looking for the old names of the towns and cities of Bulgaria. For example, the original name of sofia was sredets which means centre. many names changed after the ottomans were ousted and also after the fall of communism. The region you are looking at could now in fact be part of Rumania or Serbia. Try the old maps etc. or one of the bulgarian search engines such as search BG
