There is a great deal of mystery surrounding my grandfather. According to my father, (who was known to embellish the truth), his father was born in Sofia, Bulgaria, and came to the US as a child around 1906. Although we don't know his first name, his last name was Trifonof or Triffinov, etc. Once here, he changed his name to Mike George. He married my grandmother, Marjorie Closson, in about 1922. We cannot find any documentation whatsover of his legal name change from Trifonof to George, thus the difficulty in researching his birth name. (Does anybody know how to search the Ellis Island site to see if it was changed there?) We do believe it was some derivation of Trifonof. I am the fourth of 7 children who has tried for almost all my adult life to find my Bulgarian roots. We probably have many second cousins, etc. in Bulgaria, and we would love to be in contact with some of them. Any help you could give me would be greatly appreciated.
