I am searching for information about my grandfather, John Edwin Petes. It seems that everything the family every thought about him may be wrong. We knew him as John Edwin Peters. I hadn't been able to find anything about him anywhere. We were always told he was born in Muirkirk, Ontario, Canada, and in the Canadian Cavalry in WWI. I finally found a listing for him. Birthday's the same June 7, 1897, living in Muirkirk in 1918 when he signed up, cousin listed as William Jones, next of kin (his mothers maiden name was said to be Jones), he later emigrated to Detroit, and I found a record of that too. The catch is that all the documents state his name as John Edwin Petes, not Peters. He signed them Petes, also. The place of birth was not listed as Muirkirk as the family thought but Crmolin, Bulgaria!!!!News to everyone---my mother, his daughter, included.
Does anyone know where to begin to find his birth records in Bulgaria, I have tried on Ancestry.com, etc, no luck finding Bulgarian records. His father was told to the family to be David Peters,b: Bordeaux, France, and his mother was said to be Donna Jones b: England. I am not sure of anything anymore. Possibly David and Donna were traveling and had him in Bulgaria, but frankly his features never struck me as French looking or English. He had a dark olive complextion. So in that sense The whole Bulgarian thing does not surprise me.
Thanks in advance to anyone who may be able to help me find out who my grandfather really was. Any details or help leading me in the right direction would be greatly appreciated.
