Looking for GEGOFF relatives in Bulgaria
I had posted an earlier message for ZEZOFF,ZIZOFF,SESOFF etc.I have recently learned that my great-grandfather's name is Nicola Atanasoff GEGOFF, (Zezoff is the American version), born 1869 in Macedonia. His wife was named Patria, born 1873 also Macedonia. They had 6 children, 5 daughters who died at birth or shortly after, and a son Lazar Nickoloff, born 11 Mar 1909.They fled from Thessalonika in 1912/13 when the fighting invaded their village. After the war, they returned to their home to find it destroyed and relocated to Sofia. He came to the United States for the last time in 1921 on the SS Berengaria via Cherbourg France. His wife and son were still in Sofia when Patria died in 1924.Lazar was with cousins briefly, and then on his own at approx. 15yrs.He lived in the back of a store and worked until his father sent for him in 1929.Lazar (changed to Louis) settled in Granite City, IL, a suburb of St. Louis. He was my grandfather.Nicola had a cousin in the United States James Zezoff, whose family migrated to California. He said he had cousins and other family in Sofia.I do not know about Patria's side, as I do not know her last name.I am hoping someone can help me locate relatives, any information for Patria, and the 5 daughters who died.If anyone has any information or advice, please contact me--I would appreciate any help!!Mary
