I dont know where the name originated but I have heard it was "jewish" of the romaniote jews (greek jews) who lived in Constantinople and migrated back to greece..
My maternal grandmother had a maiden name of Politis and she was born in Dafnonas,Chios in 1917. Her father (my great-granddad) was Dimitrios Politis he was born in Dafnonas, Chios (abt. 1885). His father (my great-great-granddad) was Manolis Politis but I dont know where he was born.. maybe Elata who knows.. but I dont think Bulgaria..
Looking through the Ellis Island records of "Politis" surnames from Chios I found about 10-12.. not one of them could I attach to myself because from my g-g-granddad and on we have EVERYONE accounted for.
May have to go back to my g-g-granddad's parents and siblings to find the relationship..
