I believe W. L. Buie is William L. Buie who is listed in 1880 Christian County KY census as one of five stepchildren of John Smith. Their mother is listed as Mary. There were two other boys and two girls. The census schedule is very faint and difficult to read. There is a person whose name has been transcribed as "Roper"; however, with digital enhancement, I read it either as "Rufus" or "Rossie".

These Buies may be closely allied to the Gresham and Tandy families of Christian and Caldwell Counties, KY, if mother Mary is in fact Mary F. Gresham. A "Tandy Gresham" appears at age 21 on the 1880 Christian County census. He later appears in Caldwell County living near the Samuel Tandy family.

If this William L. Buie is the son of a John Buie, the most likely candidate is John S. Buie, son of William B. Buie and Elizabeth A. Wilson. William B. Buie was a son of Archibald and Christian Buie of Trigg County. Archibald died in 1824. Guardianship, probate and land distribution records list their children as: Alexander: William B. (W.B.); David M. (D.M.); Archibald (A.D.); Mary J. (m. Francis); Catherine; and Nancy. Land also was distributed to Duncan Buie, but there is no indication of his relationship to the Buie children--perhaps another son who was over the age of 18 at the time guardianship papers were filed. Archibald Buie was born in North Carolina before 1775; Christian Buie was born in Scotland about 1883, but her maiden surname is unknown.

I am interested in determining if this William L. Buie is a brother of Ross Tandy Buie who first appears in the Jones County, Texas 1900 census. Several of William B. Buie's children (Leander M.; Benjamin F.; Mary V.) as well as grandchildren by Leander and Benjamin and by another son, Joel, appear in Jones County, Texas circa 1900 and later. Elizabeth A. Buie, William B.'s widow, also turns up there, as of course does William B.'s brother, Archibald D. (whose name is not Archibald Alexander as is commonly believed).
