John of Gaunt, Duke of Lancaster, died of natural causes on February 3, 1399.His third wife, Katherine de Roet Swynford, was at his side. They had been legally married for three years, though she had been his mistress for many years. There was no "fourth mate" for John of Gaunt, and Katherine was the sister-in-law of Goeffrey Chaucer. It was her sister, Phillipa, who was married to the poet. Katherine's first and only other husband, was Sir Hugh Swynford, a Knight in the service of John. The children of John and Katherine were: Harry Beaufort, who became Bishop of Lincoln, and later a Cardinal and a Chancellor; John Beaufort (Earl of Somerset, Marquis of Dorset)through whom both the Tudor and Stuart kings descended; their daughter Joan married Ralph Neville of Raby (Earl of Westmoreland)and became the grandmother of both Edward IV and Richard III. It is usually a mistake to take Shakespeare's "history" literally. He frequently took "poetic license!"
