Just a side note to this - while it is plausable that the female children were recognized as Legit - that would NOT pass down the Beaufort (buford) surname, as in partrical societies the Name and Titles are passed down through the father's side.
I have never been given any solid evidence of this line and its connection with "john of gaunt". As a historican and part time genealogist - Evidence is what it is all about!
If someone has evidence, I would love to see it - it is a fancinating story and would love to help prove it
