Hi George, Regarding Claiborne and Liddy or Saluda Mustain, they appear to be the same person. That is, "Leedy" seems to be another name for Saluda. This is what my records show. My records are my own notes made from records in the Clerk's office of Pittsylvania County, VA, the notes of a fabled DAR Researcher, a Mrs. Jones, for Pittsylvania County DAR from early 1900s to mid-1900s, plus some notes of a Shelton from Washington state who called on me in 1980 when on a visit to Pittsylvania County. In Pittsylvania County Deed Book 11, page 195 Claiborne Shelton and his wife, Saluda Shelton, sold 217 acres of land on October 3, 1779. In Deed Book 13, page 481, Saluda relinquished her dower rights on September 15, 1800. In Deed Book 15, page 338, dated June 8, 1807, Claiborne and Leedy Shelton sold 96 acres. There is no marriage recorded in Pittsylvania County for Claiborne Shelton. Mrs Jones has in her notes that Claiborne Shelton married Saluda Mustain but she does not give the source. In another note to herself she wrote this: " Look for Claiborne Shelton and wife -- Saluda Mustain -- dau of Thomas Mustain." At the bottom of this note to herself, she appears to have jotted down this source later: "Order 8, 377 Jesse Mustain" I take that to be Pittsylvania County Order Book 8, p377, referring to Jesse Mustain. I find I have never checked that source so I cannot give you the details. Mrs. Jones also had a letter from Mr. Merritt in 1955 asking her about some research in which he says: (be patient) "John Shelton b. 1792 and his wife Catherine Mossbarger settled in Ohio in 1818 coming from Virginia. One son, Clairborne. It appears that John b. 1792 and Thomas b. 1799 were brothers and sons of Claiborne and Saluda Mustain Shelton." He then states: a note in a DAR magazine state "Claiborne Shelton fought in the Revolutionary War from Pittsylvania County, VA, and his son John Shelton received land in Ohio for his service in the War of 1812." So, yes, there were two Claibornes, though the grandfather was of Virginia and the grandson of Ohio. (I extracted the marriage records of all Sheltons from the beginning of Pittsylvania County to 1850 and there was no marriage record for Claiborne. I do not claim that I may not have missed it among the very large number of records I copied.) Now, there is in Pittsylvanis County a record book known to, perhaps at this time, two people,(one being me and the other being the holder of the book) entitled THE SHELTON REGISTER. This book is a record of the Shelton generations down through the great-grandchildren of the Sheltons of the generation of Crispin Shelton and his brothers who came to Pittsylvania County in the mid-1700s. . Unfortunately, in the 1920s a branch of the family in Western Virginia borrowed the book from the owner at that time and returned it with all the pages torn out except those relating directly to the owner's family. At this time no one seems to know where the missing pages are. IF ANYONE WHO READS THIS INHERITED A BUNCH OF VERY OLD, LOOSE PAGES THAT LOOK LIKE JUNK AND YOU CANNOT FIGURE OUT WHAT THEY ARE, YOU LIKELY HAVE THE BIRTHS, MARRIAGES AND DEATHS OF THE PITTSYLVANIA COUNTY SHELTONS GOING BACK TO RALPH WHO CAME FROM ENGLAND ABOUT 1703. E-MAIL ME IMMEDIATELY, PLEASE. (Patience--I'm getting to the point.) The remaining pages are a treasure because it gives vital statistics not available from official records. The owner of that book made a chart of the Shelton generations using information from THE SHELTON RECORD and gave me a copy. On that chart Claiborne Shelton (son of John Shelton b. 7-14-1722, d. 1804) is shown as having married Leedy Mustain, daughter of Thomas Mustain 5-16-1785. I also have a card name file on Sheltons I started before the days of the personal computer. The card under Claiborne Shelton reads: Claiborne Shelton, son of John, Sr., m. Saluda Mustain. Claiborne died 1848 according to his tomestone. Sons: John b. 1792 m. Catherine Mossbarger. Thomas b. 1799 m. Polly Carter 6-15-1826 in Gallia Co., Ohio. James Shelton, Washington(state of) told me 4-3-80 he had visited Claiborn's grave in Walker Cementary, Madison Co (or City, I cannot read my own note now), Indiana." So I think the Leedy is a nickname for Saluda. Since I do not have the dates on your Clairborne, I do not know if you are talking about the grandfather or the grandson. Therefore, all the details.
