Richard Casey 5/16/07
Richard,
I never believed that Elizabeth was related to the Mingo Chief. His whole family was murdered, wife and children. I don't know who Elizabeth Logan is. William was not married to Alice Rupp. William son of Richard and Anne Buffington was married to Alice. I think their son Jonthan was the one that lost his entire family in an indian raid. Our William was 16 when his father died in 1739. A lady in Illinois posted information in 1996 about a reciept for Williams last year of schooling in 1739. He was the youngest son of Thomas and Ruth not the oldest.
I heard that Elizabeth was Native American from RAlph Buffington. I was a rumor, no proof. Some have her as William Logan's oldest daughter mentioned in his will but I don't know if that is true. I know that my Grandmother Elizabeth Buffington Taylor was a blue eyed blond and my father had gray eyes and was born a blond.
William Buffington married Magdalena Ferree. She is mentioned in her parents will as wife of William Buffington. William's will mentions Richard and Mary as children of Christopher Smith. I didn't know Mary's maiden name.
This is the first record I have found with William Buffington at the wedding of a Ferree or Fiere.Ruth is Williams older sister and she is the 2nd wife of John Fiere.
This is a record of the Marriage of Mary Carpenter and Daniel Fiere.
Interestingly, there are two records of such a civil ceremony, both in 1739, one for Mary LeFevre (7-004) to David Deshler in the Deshler Family History, the other here copied from "History of Lancaster County" by Rupp, LC09 R946 in Lancaster County Historical Society.
"Whereas Daniel Fiere, Junior, of the County of Lancaster and province of Pennsylvania, yeoman, and Mary Carpenter, daughter of Henry Carpenter of the county and province aforesaid, spinster, having made due publication of their intention of marriage as the law directs: - These are therefore to certify all whom it may concern that on the first day of May, Anno Domini, 1739, before me Emanuel Carpenter, one of His Majesty's justices of the peace for the said county, they the said Daniel Fiere and Mary Carpenter appeared in a public and solemn assembly for that purpose appointed and met together at the dwelling house of the aforesaid Henry Carpenter, where he and the said Daniel Fiere did openly declare that he took the said Mary Carpenter to be his wife, promising to be unto her a loving and faithful husband till death should separate them, and she, the said Mary Carpenter, then and there in the assembly, did in like mamer openly declare that she took the said Daniel Fiere to be her husband, promising to be unto him a loving, faithful and obedient wife till death should separate them, and for a further confirmation thereof, both the said parties to these presents have hereunto interchangeably put their hands, she after the custom of marriage, assuming the surname of her husband; and we whose names are hereunto sunscribed, being witnesses present at the solemnization thereof, the year and the day first above written.

FORT PEARSALL
FROM “FRONTIER FORTS ALONG THE POTOMAC AND ITS TRIBUTARIES”
BY WILLIAM H. ANSEL, JR
The original structure was built by Pearsall with the help of his neighbors who would have included William Buffington, Luke Collins, Nicholas Casey, Thomas McGuire, John Collins, as well as members of the Kuykendall and Parsons families. The Formans were neighbors also, but they were probably busy at the time building their own fort three miles down the river. Pearsall doubtless began construction of his stockade in the fall of 1754, for by that time it was apparent that border warfare was inevitable.

Now West Virginia, Virginia Wills, State Archives.
William lived in Hampshire, Virginia.
"Will of William Buffington dated 3-13-1784, codicil 3-25-1784, pr.8-10-1784, names five sons: Thomas, William, Joe, David, and Jonathan;two daughters Ruth Collins & Susannah Sullivan. Richard and Mary arenamed in separate items of the will. L 20 each to orphans of ChristoperSmith. Executors: wife Mary, sons Thomas & William. Witnesses: Samuel Dew,Joseph Hall,Christopher Andrews."
This is all the documented information I have. It is hard to find this on the internet now because you have to go into the State Archives and run searches.
This is getting long so I will search for the Will of for the connection between Magdalena and William and post it when I find it. It was on line for awhile through the DuBois family Ulster New York Web Site.
