Heinrich BUETTNER DEU>Phila.,PA>Somerset
The story is that Heinrich Buttner (born 1727) left Germany in 1747, and came to Philadelphia on the Bilander Vernon. The story further states that Heinrich Buttner then settled in Somerset Co., Pennsylvania and his progeny account for many of the Bittners in the Somerset area (there are alot of Bittners in Somerset Co.). How accurate is this story?
The Immigrant Transcribers Guild under "Lists of Ships Pennsylvania 1727-1808" (http://genealogy.org/palam/ships.htm) contains the folowing quote, with day of month left out:
-- AUG 1747 Vernon [In the Newspaper "Pennsylvania Gazette" of 27 AUG 1747, the report from the Port of Philadelphia Custom-House listing ships entering inward includes the Brigantine Vernon, Thomas Ritchee master, from Leith. Since the list was published weekly and this list was dated 27 AUG 1747, the Vernon probably arrived between the 20th and 27th of August.] KM
The book "Pennsylvania German Pioneers: A publication of the Original Lists of Arrivals In the Port of Philadelphia From 1727 to 1808", page 363, states:
[List 112C] At the Courthouse at Philadelphia, Augt 1747. Present: The Honourable Anthony Palmer, Esqr, President, Thomas Hopkinson , Esquire.
The Foreigners whose names are underwritten, imported in the Bilander Vernon from Rotterdam & last from Leith in Scotland, Thomas Ricks, Master, did this day take the forgoing oaths to the Government.
Hennrich Buttner
Hans Michel Buttner
(there are many others listed, but I'm interested in Bittners)
I believe that the "foregoing oath" referred to above, was similiar to this:
"We, subscribers, natives and late inhabitants of the Palatinate on the Rhine, having transportd ourselves and our families into this Province of Pennsylvania, a colony subject to the Crown Of Great Britain, in hopes nad expectations of finding a retreat and peaceable settlement therein, do solemnly promise and engage that we will be faithful and bear true allegiance to His present Majesty, King George the Second, and his successors, kings of Great Britain, and will be faithful to the proprietor of this province, and that we will demean peaceably to all His said Majesty's subjects, and strictly observe and conform to the laws England and this province to the utmost of our powers and understanding.
It seems that the common route for Germans emigrating to America was to go down the Rhine to Rotterdam, Netherlands and then ship to America; and, Heinrich Buttner took this route to Philadelhia in August of 1747. How did Heinrich come to Somerset Co.?
I want to trace the descendants of this Henry Bittner b.1727. If you are descended from Henry and/or can help me with source information for Henry or any of his descendants, please email me at [email protected]
P.S. every where that it says Buttner, the u should have an umlaut over it. I haven't mastered the umlaut, yet.
