I wonder if this will help you with finding a link back to Germany, if you haven't already done so.
I have an ancestor called Julius Georg Christian BUETTNER born in Celle (Lower Saxony Germany) on 14 Sep 1835. Spellings of the name vary but in Germany it is spelt BUTTNER, with an umlaut on the u.
Anyway, He was The Emperor's German Consul in Alabama. He married a Miss McLean from New Orleans and was apparently buried there, dying in office in Alabama on 26 Nov 1887. This was reported in the Alabama 'Daily Register' newspaper on 29 Nov 1887.
There is a possibility that they had children but the article does not mention this. What is the probability that they did and that you are descended from one of them? I would be most interested in following through any possible connection to learn more about any descendants of Julius Buettner and Miss McLean in USA.
