OBIT-SUSANNAH BUDDEN W/O CAPT.R.BUDDEN

I found the following on a microfilmed copy of The Georgetown Gazette-Issue November 4, 1801 in Georgetown, SC:

Died, at Philadelphia, on the 19th instant, in the 88th year of her age, Mrs. Susannah Budden, the relict of Captain Richard Budden, a native of Old England, and so well known for many years by the frequency and safety of his voyages between London and Philadelphia, that his ship was called the Bridge between those two ports. When a young sailor, he accompanied William Penn, in his last visit to Pennsylvania, and was introduced when a man, by his son, Thomas Penn, to King George the second; who supposing him, from the plainness of his dress, to be a Quaker, pleasantly addressed him in the language of that religious society, and directed him to cover his head.

The widow of this venerable sea captain survived him five and thirty years, and passed the long evening of her life in a peaceful retirement from the eyes and bustle of the world. Her death and funeral were announced by the ringing of the bells of Christ Church (muffled)as a tribute of respect to her worth, and of gratitude to her husband, who presented the freight of those bells from London, forty or fifty years ago.

Eight days before she died, she requested to be interred in the same grave with her husband in Christ Church burying ground (which was accordingly done)and that the following lines should be added with her name, to the words "prepare to follow; which are inscribed upon his tombstone: I am prepar'd--God called me, My soul, I hope, doth rest in thee."

Although this obit doesn't list survivors or parents, it does give info such as she was born around 1713 and died in October, 1801 and her husband, Capt. Richard Budden died around 1766. I am not a relative, just thought this might help someone.

Doris
