Has anyone found clear, definitive documentation on the two Joseph Budds? The first three generations of the Budd family in America, starting with John1 Budd the immigrant, are not well documented. There is difficulty in differentiating between the Joseph2 Budd son of the immigrant John1 Budd, and the Joseph Budd3 son of John2 Budd who was son of the immigrant John1 Budd. It has been stated that Joseph2 Budd, son of the immigrant John1 Budd, was born about 1622 (Mead 1911) or 1617 (Budd 1881). There is a record of a Joseph Budd marrying a Sarah Underhill on 11 October 1695 (NYG&G April 1872). This would imply he married at 73 or 78 years old and then had either 4 (Baird) or 10 (Mead) children. Of course it is possible Joseph2 had two wives. It also has been stated that Joseph2 Budd died in 1722 (Baird 1871; Chambers 1893; Beers 1897; Pelletreau 1898; Mead 1911; Nelson 1916; and NYG&B July 1918). With birth dates of 1622 or 1717, this would have Joseph2 Budd dying at the age of 100 or 105. I have not found any reference of a Joseph Budd dying at such an advanced age. It has also been stated he was active in community affairs and held offices up to his death in 1722. Assuming the dates are correct, it is doubtful that Joseph2 Budd son of the immigrant John1 Budd married Sarah Underhill. It is more likely it was Joseph3 Budd (son of John2 Budd who was son of John1 Budd the immigrant) who married Sarah Underhill and died in 1722. This is in agreement with 'New England Marriages Prior to 1700 (Torrey 1985) which lists John1, John2, John3, and Joseph3. Torrey states Joseph3 was the son of John2. I believe most or some of the events attributed to Joseph2 Budd are correctly attributed to Jospeh3 Budd. This brings into question, which Joseph Budd was called 'Captain Budd'? Was it Joseph2 or Joseph3? A related question is who were the children of Joseph2 Budd and Joseph3 Budd? Have the two families been confused over the years? It is quite possible that the same given names were common in both Josephs' families. The will of Joseph Budd proven in 1722 lists his wife Sarah and children John, Joseph, Elisha, Jonathan Underhill, Gilbert, Sarah, Ann Tamar, and Madge (Mary). I agree with Mr. Torrey and believe this to be the will of Joseph3 son of John2. Even Mr. Pelletreau was not sure if the Joseph Budd who had a wife Sarah and died in 1722 was a son or grandson of John1 Budd. (Pelletreau 1898). Adding to the confusion are the various women who married into the Budd family and which Budd they married. For instance, Joseph2 Budd is said to have married Mary Horton (Moore 1868; Cutter 1912v2), Sarah Horton (Chambers 1893), Sarah ____ (Baird 1871), and Sarah Underhill (Nelson 1916). John2 Budd is said to have married Mary _____ (Case 1884; Chambers 1893). One reference on page 8 states Mary Horton married John Budd and on page 13 states she married Joseph Horton (Horton 1876). If the birth year of Mary Horton was 1655 (Horton 1876), it would be too late to be the mother of John2 Budd's children. It is possible the Budd brothers had more than one wife each. One reference indicates that John1 Budd, the immigrant, was married twice (Moore 1868). He states John1 Budd had by his first wife John2, Joseph2, and Judith2 and then married second _____ Brown. Mr. Torrey's documentation is a little confusing (Torrey 1985). In his New England Marriages Prior to 1700 he lists John1 Budd marrying Katherine [Brown?] in England. It is not clear if he married Katherine in England as this reference is New England Marriages Prior to 1700. John1 Budd's will calls his wife Katheren the mother of his son John2. It appears there is conflicting or incomplete information as to who was the mother(s) of John1 Budd's children. The following references are ordered by publication date.
