I'll follow up on this discussion.

Jeremiah Bucklin & Rhoda Eaton were my 4g-grandparents and I have been actively researching them for the past couple of months with the help of a genealogical angel in Berkshire County, Mass. She has taken photos of their graves (see the photos section of the Joseph Bucklin Society website) and has unearthed some very interesting things at the Berkshire Athenaeum.

First things first. The DAR records are in error because they skip a generation. The 1806 John Bucklin was John Bucklin, Jr., son of John Bucklin (1773-1859) and Hepzibah Cooper (their gravestone photos are also on the Bucklin Society website). You can see them (father & son) as part of the same household in the 1850 Adams, Mass. census.

One thing my "angel" found was an extract of Jeremiah's will which was made in 1833. Here is what she passed on to me:
John was the executor. Names mentioned in will was the dead daughter, Olive. Her children were mentioned in the will as living in Rehoboth. The dead son, Isaac ... his children were living out of state [in Kane County, Illinois]. To John went all the real estate, tools, and money to pay debts. Also mentioned were Achsah Bucklin, Jerusha, Anson C Bucklin's widow and heirs of his late son Isaac. The granddaughters Jerusha Bucklin, Olive Bucklin, and Jane Bucklin received $1.00 each. Anson C. Bucklin was given Jeremiah's desk. The granddaughter Roxanna was the wife of George Brown. Isaac Cooper, Jeremiah Cooper and Alden Cooper were given $5.00 as was grandson Horace Cushing.

John Bucklin, Jeremiah's son, had three children that we know of: Daniel Franklin Bucklin (my 3g-grandfather), John, Jr., and a daughter who married Henry Burton. This daughter's name may be Patty (or Patty might be another daughter) because we found a birth record for Patty Bucklin, daughter of John in the Adams town records.

Back to Jeremiah and his ancestry. So far we have not found definitive proof that Jeremiah's father was named John, but a lot of circumstantial evidence. One piece came via a Kane County, Illinois biographical entry for Anson C. Bucklin, grandson of Daniel, g-grandson of Jeremiah. The entry names Jeremiah's father as John Bucklin. There are also several mentions (in a History of Cheshire) of John Bucklin of Coventry R.I. as one of the first settlers in New Providence. In the early censuses, the only Cheshire/Adams area Bucklins are John, Jeremiah and Darius (and later Darius's son, Joseph). And the "angel" just today unearthed a book that named Capt. Darius Bucklin as the son of John Bucklin and Jerusha Eaton. What we're looking for now is proof that Jeremiah was Darius's brother and thus the son of John Bucklin.

Another thing we're looking for is definitive proof of who this earliest John Bucklin's parents were. All we know is that he is said to have come from Coventry, R.I. He is not listed as a Revolutionary War soldier in the Cheshire or Adams area, so I believe that this John Bucklin is NOT the same person as Capt. John Bucklin, who is said to have ended up in Herkimer Co., NY. I do believe, however, that he is related in some way to that same Coventry family (Joseph Bucklin & Susannah Jencks). How? We don't know yet.

That's pretty much where we are now. I believe (but do not have proof yet) that Jeremiah Bucklin (1745 - who married Rhoda Eaton) was the son of John Bucklin (1717 - who married Jerusha Eaton) and that John Bucklin was somehow related to the Coventry RI family of Joseph Bucklin & Susannah Jencks.

So in answer to the original question posted: 1806 John Bucklin is the grandson of Jeremiah Bucklin and Rhoda Eaton.

Oh, and we've been keeping Leonard Bucklin of the Bucklin Society updated on all of this!

Hope this helps!
