I am a direct descendant of Thomas Buckingham (the Puritan who arrived in Boston, MA on June 26,1637 and moved to Milford in 1639, through his son, the Rev. Thomas Buckingham who located in Saybrook in 1665; my paternal grandmother was born Rosalie Amelia Buckingham, in Chicago. You ask about the family crest, which is the head of a stag, facing left as one looks at it; I inherited a gold signet ring with that crest. But perhaps you are
referring to a full coat of arms: I have only a black and white depiction of that (with the crest at the top of course), from the frontispiece of the fine 1872 book (I inherited a copy), "The Buckingham Family; or the Descendants of Thomas Buckingham, One of the First Settlers of Milford, Conn., by Rev. F.W.Chapman, A.M. Unfortunately, there is no indication of the COLORS of the coat of arms, the central focus of which (below the "stag head" crest)is a large BIRD, possibly an eagle. Beneath that is the legend: "BY THE NAME OF BUCKINGHAM." A footnote in the book states that the coat of arms "has been in the family from the first settler down, but it is not known to whom, or for what achievement, it was granted." If either you or I are ever are able to find a COLOR copy (or its heraldic description, which would indicate the colors), please let's share a copy of it.
