For information of those posting here: In some of the postings related to UPTEGRAFF or UPDEGROVE and the TOTTEN connections, discussion also centres around the name BUCKOUT. BUCKOUT is an interesting example of a word which was once longer (with a suffix) and lost this ending while having its vowel sounds changed by successions of different speakers (just like Op Den Gräf became lots of other variants). Just as the French word "manteau" became pronounced as "mantel" in English, so names like "Bucholski" (most likely Polish) first dropped the "i", then branched off to Polish "Bucholc" or "Buchols", then to "Bucholtz" (the most common variant today) and sometimes as "Buckholts" (the way it is posted on this forum). Somewhere along the line, the "h" became "k" and the name started being spelled "Buckol(t)z", "Buckles", "Buckoll", and "Buckl(e)", depending on what country and ethnic group pronounced it. The “l” sound was eventually lost, turning it into "Buck-ow" or "Buck-owt", it eventually became "Buckout" as it is discussed in this forum. But enough of all this...
