You can also use the information you get from this site to request more from the National Archives. The BLM site actually list land patents. If the patent issued is for Cash they normally just have the receipts for the transactions. These receipts will help you get a better idea of when your ancestor entered as the patent date on the BLM site is always later. But if it's for things like Land Warrants/Grants, Homestead's and such there's a wealth of information you can get. This includes affidavits from the land owner, affidavits from two neighbors, receipts, if it's a grant they sometimes contain military records and for homesteads copies of the newspaper posting announcing the claim.

You need to send a request to the National Archives on a Form 84 (Land Entry Files). You can get copies of these sent to you by sending an email to:

inquire@arch2.nara.gov

Just include in the body of the Message the words Form 84, how many you want and your mailing address. They'll send them to you within a few days. The cost is $10.00 per land packet you receive from the Archives. Just remember that it the description of the land says Cash Entry there might not be anything but the receipts with your ancestors signature on it.
