The Scott-Buccleuch history is well known. What we need to find out is---who was the first Buckelew in North America. The first documented proof is for Peter Buckelew on Staten Island in 1680. He was probably born c.1644 and we know he died in 1696. Some researchers have confused Peter Buckelew with Pieter Billoue. This is why the probable French connection would be an error. They were both on Staten Island at the same time. Court Records for 1680 prove that they were not the same person. From past experience, you will have a very difficult time trying to locate records in France or Scotland. The Duke of Buccleuch was created from the marriage of Ann Scott, the Countess of Buccleuch to the Duke of Monmouth. He took her family name and became the first Duke of Buccleuch. You won't find any records concerning our family and the Duke of Buccleuch.
