Hi Marilyn,
Sounds like your problem is really similar to mine. I descend from Joseph W's son Elip. His headstone says he was born Feb. 1866, which would make him the son of Harriet Brown. I have not been able to find where or when she was buried. It is more than likely an unmarked grave. The 1870 and 1880 census indicates he was born 1867 and is doubtful that he was born Feb 1867 as marriage to Sarah Caroline Mabry was Nov 1866. The 1900-20 census show various ages so that isn't much help. The death certificate does not list his mother's name only his father's name as Joe Buckelew. Elip's daughter, Ida, states that his mother was Sarah Caroline Mabry so that is what I am going with until other information would indicate his mother as Harriet Brown.
I would say that from the birth date of Joseph F you would be safe to assume that Sarah Caroline Mabry is his mother as well. It is interesting to note that he was not listed on the census in the household. I have another ancestor that was never listed with parents as he was born after the 1860 census and for some unknown reason was not listed in the 1870 census.
I would be interested in Joseph F's descendants if you are willing to share that information. Please feel free to email me directly.
Mary
