after considerable searching I finally found Marie; my grandmother had her name wrong (grin)

she is Maria Bucher, daughter of Henry Bucher and Mary/Polly Mummert

we have yet to find a birth record for her, or a marriage record for her parents, but thanks to newspaper articles (estate settlement) and a will, we have her lineage

she is listed as "niece" in the estate of John Bucher; shown as married to Adam Grove and living in St Louis MO, which can apply to no other Maria Bucher

her father is Henry, older (deceased) brother of that John Bucher; they are sons of Christian Bucher

I have unsourced information that Henry Bucher died "before 3 Feb 1830" ... this information was supposedly printed in a booklet offered at a Bucher reunion some years ago, and I would LOVE to get a look at it, or a transcription of it

my educated guess is that there is either a settlement of Henry Bucher's estate or guardianship for toddler Maria (who would have been about 4 years old), buried in the Orphans Court records for Adams County, in Gettysburg,
recorded on that date

up to this point, Henry Bucher's wife was known only as "Mary"; but in researching Henry Bucher's siblings and who they married, I came to the will of Samuel M. Mummert, who mentions (among others) his daughter Polly, married to John Baker ... then he says that if Polly does not want her portion of his estate, it is to go instead to granddaughter Maria, married to Adam Grove

I can't conceive of any other explanation, other than that Polly, daughter of Samuel Mummert, is the missing "Mary" who is mother to Maria Bucher and widow of Henry Bucher

I have been unable to find a marriage record for John Baker and Mary/Polly Mummert (or Mary/Polly Bucher) either,
though the couple shows up on several subsequent censuses

I have yet to find Maria (Bucher) Grove's exact death date; my grandmother (her granddaughter) supplied only the year (1915) and the location (St Louis MO) when she filled out her DAR paperwork

always glad to learn more, and talk with others working on these lines

Candy
