Bucher Family Genealogy Forum

Dear Chad:I clicked on your name to get your e-mail address, but it didn't come up. If you would be so kind as to send me your e-mail address, I will send you what I have on Nicholas Bucher I. I would be thrilled to receive your info by e-mail. Are you interested in only the stuff I have on Nicholas I, or do you want all my information on the Buchers. It is in a PAF Register Report format, and runs to 200+ pages. I'll note here that when I get info, I put it under each individual it pertains to, i.e., if a census report lists 10 household members, I list that census in each person's notes. That way, when looking at any individual, you know that you have everything that pertains to him/her. It makes for redundancy, but I have found it to be very effective in doing research. I am descended from Nicholas I (1670), Nicholas II (1707), Nicholas III (1731), Michael (1762), John (1794), Michael (1827, moved to Ohio 1855), John Michael (1857), John Biller Bucher (1893), Doris Kester Bucher Cable (1919), Dominique 'Joyce' Cable Delphine (1942). I have been searching for info on Nicholas I for six years now. I knew he probably had more than one son - most of them did - but just couldn't make the links until I contacted Carrie Pence. What a gold mine! Incidentally, I found four books on the Booher/Booker family. At the time I didn't know how they fitted in, but I dutifully copied them. Below are my notes for Bartholomew Bucher/Booher (Sr.) 1. PARENT-SIBLING-SPOUSE-CHILDREN: Mary Palmer Phillips, THE FAMILY RECORD OF DAVID LEHMAN BOOHER AND HIS WIFE ELIZABETH NUTTS; 1680-1887; no publication data; pp 29-32; Dayton & Montgomery Co [OH] Public Library [R-B92-B7244P]. "BOOHER LINE OF DESCENT: [1] Nicholas Booher, b 1680-____; [2] Balgas Booher, ____-____; [3] ***BARTHOLOMEW, d 1792; [4] Daniel, d 1808; [5] Samuel, 1780-1857; [6] David Lehman Booher, 1811-1887. George Norbury MacKenzie in Colonial Families of the United States of America 3.46, states that: "Balgas Booher. Further research is needed on Balgas Booher, the second in the line. It is possible that he didn't come to this country until later, and sent his sons Bartholomew and Peter to join their grandfather, Nicholas. BARTHOLOMEW and Peter arrived in Philadelphia 3 Sep 1739 on the Loyal Judith from Rotterdam but last from Deal in England. This is from Pennsylvania German Pioneers, 1.266. Johan Baltes Booher arrived 27 Sep 1746, 1.360. ... BARTHOLOMEW BOOHER. The first record we have of Bartholomew after his arrival in 1739 is a warrant 15 Aug 1748 for 100 acres of land in Lancaster, now Franklin County, PA. He was living in Frederick County, MD in 1757 as he was paid 22 pounds for supplies in the French and Indian War. (Maryland Historical Magazine 9.370.). BARTHOLOMEW's first deed in Frederick County was in 1760, others from 1773 to 1791. A patent for 317 acres in 1785 and other deeds show that he was a landowner in Bedford Co, PA. Possibly some of this was in Maryland before the Mason-Dixon line was established. BARTHOLOMEW lived southwest of Middletown, Frederick County, MD. Lutheran church records there and at Frederick include the family names. BARTHOLOMEW's will was probated at Frederick 1 May 1792, G.M. 2.431. It mentions his wife, Margaret, and 14 children. His widow died in 1796. In 1941 Bartholomew's desk was in the possession of D.G. Fox, Miamisburg, Ohio, a descendant of one of his daughters [Catherine]." 2. BIOGRAPHY: THE BOOHER GENEALOGY 1773-1969; 1739-1941; Graham Printing, Piqua OH, 1969; p 1; Wright State University Library [Special Collection of the Miami Valley Genealogical Society], Dayton, Ohio [MVGS,CS,71,B6]. "The first of the family of Boogher in American was Nicholas Boogher, Sr. born in 1680 in Germany who came over on the Friendship in 1727 and settled in Pennsylvania. He was descended from Peter Boogher who received a grant of arms from his sovereign for military services in 1450. The line descent is given through Nicholas II, 1712-1767. One of the descendants of Nicholas II was BARTHOLOMEW BOOHER. [NOTE: Bartholomew was the son of Balgas Bucher who was son of Nicholas I]. The first record we have of Bartholomew after his arrival in 1739 is a warrant 15 Aug 1748 for 100 acres of land in Lancaster now Franklin Co, PA. He was living in Frederick County, MD in 1757 as he was paid 22 pounds for supplies in the French and Indian War. (Maryland Historical Magazine 9.370). NOTE: The subsequent material is identical to that contained in first source. 3. SPOUSE-CHILDREN(14): Allen G. Booher, Sr., MY OFTEN MISPELLED NAME IS BOOHER; 1680-1987; self-published, 1987; p 5; LDS Family History Library, SLC UT [929.273, B644bag]. "BARTHOLOMEW BOOHER FAMILY 1727-1987. The Booher name was spelled BUCHER by the earliest colonists. Alfred Wilfrid Dellquest in These Names of Ours, Crowell, 1938, says that it was a Norman-French name meaning woodhouse from bois, a wood and that it was pronounced Boo-shay. Other variants are Bouchar, Boucher, Bouger, Bougher, Boogher, Bugher, and Booker. The first of the family of Boogher in America was Nicholas Boogher Sr. born in 1680 in Germany who came over on the Friendship in 1727 and settled in Pennsylvania. He was descended from Peter Boogher who received a grant of arms from his sovereign for military services in 1450. The line descent is given through Nicholas II, 1712-1767." [ERROR: The line descent is actually through Balgas, the brother of Nicholas II.] One of the descendants of Nicholas II was BARTHOLOMEW BOOHER. The first record we have of BARTHOLOMEW after his arrival in 1739 is a warrant 15 Aug 1748 for 100 acres of land in Lancaster, now Franklin County, PA. He was living in Frederick County, MD in 1757 as he was paid 22 pounds for supplies in the French and Indian War. . [NOTE: The subsequent material is identical to that contained in first source.] 4. RECORDS: Charles Lee Booker, Jr., THE BUCHER/BOOKER FAMILY, 1686-1990; self-published, 1990; p 4; LDS Family History Library, SLC UT [929.273,B852b]. "... I visited the Frederick County, MD Courthouse and discovered many deeds, wills, etc. of the Nicholas, Peter, and BARTHOLOMEW BUCHER/BOOKER family listed during the middle 1700's.... Winfield Scott Booher wrote in his Booher history that BARTHOLOMEW BUCHER and his brother Hans Peter Bucher, immigrated via Rotterdam (Holland) from Germany, arriving in Philadelphia, PA on 3 Sep 1739. Both men settled in Middletown, Frederick Co, MD. This history is also found on film in Salt Lake City." As you can see, this appears to be the classic case of initial errors being passed on when subsequent researchers don't check the sources. It is also evident why I have been so confused about this family line. I look forward with great anticipation to your e-mailed info. Thanks, Dominique Delphine DZDelphine@aol.com
