I am researching this family for a friend and have rec'd a letter which refers to Pres. Buchanan as an ancestor. Following is the letter. If anyone can help connect the dots to these Buchanan descendants, I would appreciate your help.

Letter to State of Tennessee, County of Shelby
City of Memphis
June 26, 1931

I, Oma Buchanan, wish to make claim against the estate of William Buchanan, deceased, which is to be divided among the lawful heirs of the said William Buchanan. To the best of my knowledge and belief the following facts, as secured from family Bible and from tradition, are correct:

Three Buchanan brothers came to America. One of these is believed to have been James Buchanan, the father of President James Buchanan. The son or grandson of one of the other two brothers were:

John Buchanan, born July 12, 1792. He enlisted in the War of 1812 in Captain T.H. Clark's Company of Virginia militia from Washington County, Virginia. For this service he secured a pension in later years, Bureau of Pension's No. S.C. 15608-Ill. He married 1st Margaret (Peggy) Brightwell in Prince Edward County, Virginia, December 10, 1819, who died December 13, 1842, in Lauderdale County, Tennessee. They had the following children:

Charles Robert Buchanan, b. Oct. 9, 1827 m. Mary Elizabeth Murrah
John Richard Buchanan m. Katherine Elma Carlton
William Buchanan m. Mina Johnson or Jacobs
Thomas Buchanan m. Mina Johnson or Jacobs
Earnest Buchanan killed during Civil War
Kellie Buchanan m. Mina Posey
Albert B. Buchanan, b. 1835 m. Ursula Ham
A daughter m. Mr. Baxter (A relative of Gov. Baxter of Ark.)
A daughter d. unmarried

John Buchanan married the 2nd time in Lauderdale County, Tennessee, in 1848 or 1849 Miss Nancy Clopton who survived him. He died in Sharp County, Arkansas, USA, December 10, 1877. The children by his second marriage are as follows:

Mary Buchanan m. George Martin
George Whitfield Young Buchanan m. Celia Horn
Virginia (Jennie) Buchanan m. H.C. Carter
Alexander Campbell Buchanan m. Josie H. McGee

All of the above named children are dead.

Alexander Campbell Buchanan (last named) b. November 27, 1856, d. Nov. 23, 1899, m. Feb. 27, 189 to Josie H. McGee, b. April 6, 1866. Their children:

Raymond Buchanan b. Nov. 30, 1895, m. Katherine Gray
Oma Buchanan, b. Aug. 21, 1897

Raymond Buchanan, (above named), m. Katherine Grey. Their children:

Katherine Jo Buchanan b. Oct. 8, 1924
Florence Mae Buchanan b. Nov. 12, 1927

It is my understanding that the administration of this estate is being handled by L. D. Buchanan of Houston, Texas to whom I am now sending this claim.

Respectfully submitted
